Pushkar is a town in the Ajmer district in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is situated 14 km (8.7 mi) northwest of Ajmer at an average elevation of 510 m (1,670 ft) and is one of the five sacred dhams (pilgrimage site) for devout Hindus. According to Hindu theology, the pond at the Katas Raj Temples near Choa Saidan Shah in Chakwal District of Pakistan has a theological association with Shiva; it was formed by the tears of Lord Shiva which he is believed to have shed after the death of his wife, Sati. The story goes that when Sati died, Shiva cried so much and for so long, that his tears created two holy ponds – one at Pushkara in Ajmer in India and the other at Ketaksha, which literally means raining eyes,
Perhaps one of the major tourist destinations in India which attracts both Indians and foreigners equally, Pushkar lake is situated in Rajasthan. It is also regarded as a sacred lake for the Hindus. Pushkar Lake is surrounded by 52 bathing ghats where pilgrims throng in large numbers to take a sacred bath around Kartik Poornima.
The scenic lake of Pushkar is situated in a valley about 10 kms to the northwest of Ajmer. Pushkar Lake is enclosed by hills and desert. Pushkar Lake is one of the most holy place for Hindus. There are about 52 Ghats and 400 temples in Pushkar which are situated on the banks of the Pushkar Lake. It is considered that the famed waters of the Pushkar wash away the sins of whole life.Pilgrims from all over come to take bath in the holy waters of Pushkar on the day of Kartik Purnima or on any of the four days before the day of Kartik Purnima and also worship at the Ghats.
How to Reach Pushkar Lake
Pushkar is easily connected to the major roadways and national highways of Rajasthan and India. The Marwar bus stand is situated in the north of Pushkar and is linked to long distance places, like Delhi, Jodhpur and Bikaner. The other stand is Ajmer bus stand, at a distance of 11 km in the east of Pushkar. Regular buses ply from Pushkar to Ajmer, Jaipur, Indore and Nagda every 15 minutes.

History of Pushkar lake
The holy lake in Pushkar which is similar to the River Ganga which was believed that it was formed by the tears of Lord Shiva which was shed after the death of his wife, Sati. With its holy lake and numerous Ghats and Temples, Pushkar is one of the most sacred Hindu towns in India. Legend associates Lord Brahma with its creation and this is the most famous Brahma temple.
Best time to visit
The best time to visit is from Oct-Dec when the Puskar Camel Fair takes place. The again, you can visit between Jan-March.
